Leadership Training for Young People


In the winter of 2010-2011 (one year after the earthquake), Meike began teaching leadership courses which doubled as advanced English courses and social action/peer support groups. With a very enthusiastic and curious cohort of about 10 young Haitian students, they read Martin Luther King, Maya Angelou, Mahatma Gandhi, Mary Oliver, Dr. Ben Carson, and many others’ writings. The Carver Institute Update


Springtime is here and we have some exciting news to share with you about what our students are learning! Throughout this school year, Carver students have been studying a wide range of important subjects such as mathematics, language skills, story telling, art, sports, and safety education.  Occasionally, the students also have the chance to learn about the history of Haitian culture and celebrate important national holidays. 2011 Volunteer Teams


The exchange of expertise, ideas, and culture has been an integral part of The GROW Project since we began over three years ago.  This year, we have organized three teams from West Virginia to visit and support the GROW Haiti team in Cap Haitien, Haiti. Junior Toussaint Update


 JUNIOR UPDATE Fall 2011 Roland Junior Toussaint, or “Junior”, is one of the young bright students that has come into the English program at the Centre Educatif at Bonnay Dugal, Haiti. What’s Happening in WV?


The GROW Project is located in Dogwood Studio along RT. 219 in Ronceverte, WV across from the high school and hospital.  Dogwood Studio is our office space and over the next coming months, we hope it will be a community space, for youth and community members alike. EDUCATION IS HAITI’S FUTURE Children are the future and education is the key to sustainable development of a community.  Through generous donations, The GROW Project opened the doors to a primary school, The Carver Institute, located at the Centre Educatif at Bonnay Dugal, where we run our volunteer programming.  Currently the school has three employees and The GROW Project provided ten full scholarships on a need and merit basis to twelve students—eight students in Kindergarten and four students in Primary […]

JULY 2011: NEW CLASSROOMS This summer, Meike took her twin brothers to Bonnay Dugal to build two new classrooms for the Institut Carver’s primary school. Our current facilities only allowed us to teach on the porch. With the new classrooms, the primary schol will be able to teach much larger classes. Thanks to the collaboration of our many friends in this area who helped to volunteer and the twins’ extensive knowledge of construction, the classrooms were completed in two weeks. […]
